Introduction
One of the first questions on everyone’s mind when they arrive in a new city is where to shop from. Shopping for food, furniture, clothes for the coming winter, is a major item on any newcomer’s agenda at MIT.
Whether it is for groceries, household goods, or clothing, Boston offers many different places to shop from. But remember, location is very important! Newbury Street, Boylston Street, and the Financial District are generally more expensive.
Suburban shopping malls, big supermarkets and factory outlet stores will usually have lower prices than trendy shops. There are also many sales, especially around holidays that you can take advantage of. It is also good to ask if there are any special discounts. Many shops, especially grocery stores, offer free membership cards which allow you to get discounts on purchases.
Return Policy: If you want to return something that you bought, you usually have 30 days to bring it back to the store. Remember to keep the original receipt.
Return policies vary by store though. Usually, you can return the item for a full refund, or exchange it with a different item. In the latter case, you will get ‘store credit’, which means that you can buy something else from the store of equal value within a given period of time.
A note on how to use this section
The following is a list of stores and shops by the types of products they sell. The stores listed here were chosen because they are either close to MIT or are popular among the members of spouses&partners@mit.
For a complete listing of shops please refer to the Yellow Pages of your phonebook. When the stores have a website, we provide the link to it. Once on the website, go to STORE LOCATOR or DIRECTIONS to find the closest and more convenient address for you.
When the stores websites don't give the exhaustive directions or
when the
store doesn't have its own website, you may use the trip planning on MBTA's (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) website if you want to use public transportation or mapquest if you want to find either the map or the driving directions to the store.
This website gives some information regarding which bus to take, but since bus routes can change, it is best to check with the MBTA first.
