Public Transportation
The city of Boston and its surrounding cities, such as Cambridge and Somerville, have a very reliable public transportation system. The Greater Boston area is easily accessible by trains and buses. Further out, there are commuter rails and local bus systems.
Within Greater Boston
Boston's public transportation system is operated by the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority). The MBTA runs subways, buses, harbor ferries and the commuter rail. Operation time is from 5 A.M. to 12.30 A.M.
Subway stations and Bus stops are marked with a
sign. Fares range between $2.00 and $1.70 for subway, and $1.50 and $1.25 for buses depending on how you pay (Charlie Card, Charlie Ticket or cash). Children under 11 travel for free, when accompanied by a paying adult. More information about fares, subway lines, buses, maps and schedules (including monthly T-passes) can be found at the MBTA.
While not all buses and subway stations or trains are handicap accessible, the MBTA is updating its system. The Red line is the most accessible and the Green line is the least. Be careful though, sometimes elevators at stations may be out of order. Most buses have ramps and lifts to help seniors and people with disabilities.
MIT subsidizes monthly T-Passes for students and some employees. You can get more information at the MIT Parking and Transportation Office.
The MBTA also operates 'The Ride', which is a door-to-door service for people with disabilities.
Outside Boston
There are many ways to get out of Boston. You can use the Commuter Rail (operated by the MBTA) to go to the suburbs of Boston. The commuter rails serve the area 100 miles around Boston. More information about fares, lines and schedules can be found at the MBTA Commuter Rail.
For long distance travel, please check railways, buses and airlines:
