Introduction

Are you new to Boston? Are you new to the USA? Are you interested in working here? Here are some ideas and information that may be useful in finding paid or unpaid work.

Note: You may also want to see our Education section.

Before you arrive:

Think of your personal goals and what you would like to achieve while at MIT. It can be more difficult to find a job when you are not clear about what you would like to gain from the experience. Keep in mind that the process of finding a job can take between 3 to 12 months.

If you decide that you want to work at a paid position, check with the International Scholars Office or the International Students Office to see whether your spouse is eligible for a J-1 visa. As a dependant you will receive a J-2 visa and will therefore be eligible for a US work permit.

If you decide to do volunteer work, there is usually no problem regarding the type of visa you are on. For more information, please check visa requirements for volunteer work.

If you decide to take courses and/or study for a degree, see the FAQs on Education
