Introduction
America's health system is highly developed and offers lots of services, but it is extremely expensive. Therefore, having sufficient health insurance is highly recommended (and with some visa types it is even required by law that you have medical insurance).
In the US, most routine medical care is provided either by a family (or general) practitioner who may care for your whole family, or a pediatrician for children and an internist for adults. If you need to see any other kind of specialist, your general physician will refer you. In many doctors' offices, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, or a physician's assistant may also give you care.
Don't forget to bring your immunization history from your country; including your children's and your spouse's, especially if he/she wants to find employment. Students will receive a special medical form from MIT to complete, including proof of required immunizations. If you or your family have some particular medical needs, it would be helpful to bring your medical history written in English.
Please check section on On-campus resources for information about what health and counseling facilities are available for your convenience at MIT.
