The Politics of Defense

Back to Research Index

US strategy and military expenditures depend on the threats the nation faces, but also on the state of domestic politics, the lobbying of the defense industries, the interests of the armed services and other defense agencies, and the re-election desires of members of Congress. We are writing a book that describes and analyzes the organizations, processes and outcomes of American defense politics. Why do we outspend and outgun the rest of the world in security, and how can these outcomes be managed to be more efficient and more responsive to actual threats?

Professor Harvey M. Sapolsky and affiliate Eugene Gholz are conducting this project.
