Greek Reading Group Page
Welcome to the Greek Reading Group page, formed for the Harvard
Extension School class of Greek Ia, Fall 2003 and Greek Ib, Spring 2004.
I will try to post the current reading assignment here, as well as links
to resources, etc.
Reading Assignment
- 1/13/04 to 1/27/04: The story of Jonah, first page, lines 1-10.
- 1/27/04 to 3/30/04: The story of Jonah, last page, lines 1-20. Try
to look at the first part of the Crucifixion too.
- 6/2/04 to 6/8/04: Just show up!
- 6/8/04 to 6/21/04: ?
Meeting Arrangements
- Meeting 1: Tuesday, January 27th, at 7:30pm.
- Meeting 2: Tuesday, March 30th, at 7:30pm.
- Meeting 3: Tuesday, June 8th, at 7:30pm.
- Meeting 4: Monday, June 21st, at 7:30pm.
Meeting location: The main lobby of MIT, 77 Massachusetts Avenue. If
you show up late, we will try to post a message on one of the kiosks in
the lobby indicating where we have gone.
I believe that we will try going to a classroom on the 2nd floor of
building 4. To get there from 77 Massachuetts Ave, go straight down the
long corridor, past the lobby with the big windows on the right, past
the big dollar bill painted on the wall. At the 2nd set of stairs past
the dollar bill (one is right after the dollar bill and the second set
is another section further on), go up one floor and take the corridor
perpendicular to the original hall. The classrooms are down the hall on
the left hand side; check for us in one of them. We will probably use
4-251 or 4-253, which are most of the way down the hall.
Electronic Resources
- The mailing list we are using for this group is
greek-reading@mit.edu. Feel free to ask questions, etc over this
list.
- I am also creating a discussion group/posting forum. The site for
this is Greek Reading Blog
Forum. Anyone can read it, but if you wish to post to it, you must
register with blogspot. Email me if you need help with this; I sent
registration invites to the log on 1/16/04.
- A
Greek morphology decoder for those really hard words.
- Greek
and Latin language resource site including links to the Middle
Liddle online, etc.
Other Reading Materials
- An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon, ISBN 0199102066, aka the
Middle Liddle. I have this lexicon and it has served me well up to this
point. $45.00
at amazon.com.
- An Introduction to Greek, ISBN 0865165548. Known as "Crosby and
Schaeffer" (the authors), I learned Greek the first time from this
little book. It's a bit sparse (it was written in 1928), but it
provides a much gentler introduction to Greek than Hansen and Quinn. $23.00
from amazon.com.
- A Greek Reader for Schools, ISBN 0865162670. A short book which has
a number of excerpts and adaptations of literature, including Aesop,
Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Plato, etc. It includes a vocabulary
in the back and some notes. Paperback. I expect to try to translate
some things from this book at some point. $19.00
at amazon.com.
- Xenophon: Anabasis, ISBN 067499101X. One of the Loeb series, it
contains parallel English and Greek of the Anabasis. Not much in terms
of notes or vocabulary, this is tough to do on your own. Hardcover. $12.50
at amazon.com.
