HORAI CALENDAR 99

"Muge no komyo" - O, Unhindered Light!

The Horai Association publishes a calendar each year with Zuiken's sayings in his original calligraphy, their printed letters in Japanese, and their English translation. The English translation of the twelve sayings of Zuiken is presented here for the sake of viewers of this home page.

January
New Year's Day
Namu amida butsu
the Treasure Boat.

February
Touched by the Light
 of the sincere, compassionate Heart,
The ice of doubt having melted,
I rest in peace;
What joy to look adoringly
at the Name of inconceivable
Buddha-Wisdom!

March
The sphere of Nirvana, transquil and inactive,
Transcending good and evil,
manifests itself as the Name;
The voice is the calling voice of
Buddha's Wisdom and Great Compassion.

April
Though the flowe falls,
next spring,
the flower of the Dharma
Will bloom again;
How joyful!

May
White cloud
drifts across the sky
along the pathless path.

June
Namu amida butsu is our parent,
who watches over us;
protects us;
and waits of us.

July
Having abandoned the thought of pursuing
the Buddha,
I am peaceful;
the pale summer moon.

August
Even if the flower falls,
I feel no sorrow;
The time to fall is the time to float,
for the lotus-flower.

September
Forgetting both good and evil,
 setting aside calculations and faith,
I look up in the sky -
the serene moon!

October
A helpless forlorn boat
adrift in the vast ocean;
  The Light of Compassion reaches from afar
from the moon of the Vow-Power.

November
Man must die;
though least expected,
me, too.
May my messages of the Dharma
remain as my memento.

December
How fondly I feel Namu amida butsu!
It's joy to see it -
pleasure to hear it;
I feel closeness when I recite it.
While continuously mindful of it,
I am taken to my Parent's home.
