STeLA Leadership Forum 2008

Description

The STeLA Leadership Forum 2008 will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, USA, from August 2 through August 9, 2008. This Forum will bring together 15 students from the US, mostly from universities in the Greater Boston area, 15 students from Japan, mostly from universities in the Tokyo area and 15 students from China, mostly from universities in the Beijing area. The Forum consists of three components: a leadership curriculum (keynote speeches and workshops), a thematic session (this year focusing on Global Public Health), and the group project (a short movie competition).

The leadership session will build on existing programs with expert lecturers to provide a firm foundation of leadership for the participants to make subsequent activities highly effective. In the thematic sessions, students will not only learn about the specifics of the theme through lectures and site visits, but they will also reflect on how they behave in discussion sessions in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary setting. Additionally, we will have keynote speeches from leaders in various backgrounds of science and technology. We anticipate that the Leadership Forum will become an annual event. To maintain the network created during the Leadership Forum 2008 and support continued leadership learning, STeLA will be forming an Alumni Association, the objectives of which will include advising the organizing committee of STeLA Leadership Forum 2009 and beyond.

We will select the venue for Forum 2009 a year prior to the forum and announce it at the end of the 2008 Forum. To broaden the diversity in our program, we anticipate expansion into a variety of participating countries from all over the world.
