Leadership curriculum
In the first two days, participants will explore leadership and teamwork skills through lectures and workshops. Keynote speeches will be delivered by Susumu Tonegawa, Ph.D. and Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D. as leaders in science and technology from various backgrounds - business, politics, policy, academia, and media - providing students with the opportunity to learn directly from leading figures in science and technology. In addition, experts on leadership curriculum will oversee seminars and workshops concerning leadership, which will be referred to repeatedly throughout the Forum during the feedback sessions.
Further leadership sessions will occur throughout the Forum in order to root the Forum in leadership development.
Thematic Sessions
The leadership curriculum is followed by thematic sessions, in which participants explore contemporary issues through lectures, discussions, and site visits. The thematic session is designed to provide real-world examples of scientific and technological global issues in order to simulate a developmental process which can be applied to other scientific issues. This year we will be focusing on Global Public Health.
The thematic session consists of scientific and technical knowledge (background reading, seminars, lectures, etc.), site visits (companies, factories, etc.), and group discussions.
Group Project and Public Outreach
The focus here is to develop individual leadership skills and reinforce the ideas of group dynamics though teamwork. This year's project will be to create a short movie concerning an issue in global public health. Participants will be encouraged not only to create the best movie but also to actively experiment with and improve their leadership skills. Each day, students will spend time in the feedback sessions reflecting on their role within the team.
The movie will be based on an issue in global public health to reinforce what the participants have learned to allow them to contribute their own knowledge. The movie connects the Forum with the world at large, allowing participants to creatively express an issue in science and technology.
