As the executive director of the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP), Shawna Young has worked to build a talented pipeline of middle and high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in science and engineering. Under her leadership, the OEOP has initiated new programs and collaborations to serve more students locally and nationally. Before coming to the OEOP, Shawna developed a close relationship with the office as the instructor for the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Genomics Course and counselor for the Saturday Engineering Enrichment & Discovery (SEED) Academy Life Mastery course. At the same time, Shawna served as the administrator for the Diversity Initiative and Educational Outreach Program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Prior to joining the Broad, Shawna worked at the Educational Development Center in curriculum development, and she also taught science for several years in North Carolina. Shawna received a BS in Chemistry from Howard University and MAT in Science Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, she is a member of the Advisory Board for the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and a member of the Professional Development Committee for the National Science Teachers Association. Shawna has a great deal of experience working with students and helping them prepare for college and careers in science.
