Program Description

In Summer 2004, the MIT Office of Engineering Special Programs, in partnership with the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education (CAHSEE), launched the STEM Program to offer local public middle school students a chance to improve their math and science skills and chances for success in the future.

The STEM Program is about much more than just fractions and chemical compounds. It offers students a chance to learn on a college campus and to meet people who are turning their curiosity and passion for discovery into successful careers.

There are three parts to the STEM Program:

a five-week summer institute that introduces students to a college prep curriculum with courses in physics, chemistry, probability and statistics and more,

an academic-year Mentoring Program that pairs participants with MIT undergraduates who are making math, science and engineering their career path and

Parents' Programming seminars that offer families access to leaders in educational research and practice in academic high achievement.

Using this three-pronged approach, we bring together students, their families, MIT and local communities to make young people's interests in the technical fields more accessible. Together, we prepare students for high academic performance, stimulate their lifelong love of math and science and create new pathways for them to pursue academic and professional careers in the technical fields.
