A core belief at MIT is the interdependence of teaching and research. When faculty interact with students in the classroom, in tutorials, in the supervision of work and writing, in special events, and in informal encounters, everyone is stimulated by the exchange of ideas and information. As in any educational setting, these exchanges have a motivational value: we keep each other on our toes.

There is particular value, however, to having a close connection between teaching and research in a young and vibrant field like STS. Because the field is still emerging, there is little distance between research projects and teaching practice. Students and faculty understand that they are working together to construct the core concepts and models of the field, and that this happens in the interaction of research and education.
