Re-Entry Steps and Resources
Meeting with the Study Abroad Office Team
A required re-entry meeting is generally held within the first month of return. We look forward to seeing and to speaking to you about your study abroad or domestic study away experience. We are also here if you need any assistance as you start readjusting to MIT. Please contact Jennifer Cook, Study Abroad and Distinguished Fellowships Office, (jacook@mit.edu) to schedule an appointment shortly after your return.
We will ask that you complete an evaluation form on your study abroad program, which will be put on file for the use of other MIT students contemplating an application to the same university/program.
We will ask you to write a testimonial about your study abroad experience (approximately 1-2 pages). Please include your reflections on the insitution/university, courses, teaching style, student life and local culture as well.
Accessing Study Abroad Community
Re-entry to the United States and to MIT could be even more difficult than the culture shock that you experienced during your study abroad. Articulating your feelings about your experience abroad and about returning can be very helpful. It is also important to recognize and reach out for support.
If shortly after your return, you would like to talk to an MIT student who has been through a study abroad experience, please let us know and we will put you in touch. If you feel that you need additional support for your re-entry to MIT, please do not hesitate to contact us about that as well.
Also, every fall and spring, we will have a get together for MIT students who returned from a study abroad program, so you can all meet and exchange experiences. Please check our website for more details at the beginning of the academic year and again in the spring.
Re-entry Conference (usually in October)
Every fall for the last several years, there has been a re-entry conference for study abroad alums. We encourage you to participate. We post more details about the conference closer to the date.
If you applied for MIT undergraduate housing for the semester of your return to MIT, please confirm your housing arrangements with the MIT Housing Office. For more information on housing, please contact Robin Smedick (617-258-5488) or visit the Housing Office website (http://web.mit.edu/housing/).
Transfer Credit (for all students except CME)
To receive transfer credit for your study abroad, you must complete a Request for Additional Credit Form (available online and also at the Student Services Center, 11-120, the Registrar's Office, 5-119, or the HASS Office, 14N-408). This form establishes equivalence between subjects taken elsewhere and those offered at MIT. You will need to collect signatures for the form from the Transfer Credit Examiners in the departments granting you credit. In advance of the meetings with Transfer Credit Examiners, gather necessary documentation on courses that you have taken (syllabi, graded papers, information about instructors, reading lists and other relevant information). The completed form must be submitted to the Registrar's Office by the end of the eleventh week (drop date) of your first term back.
The transfer credit will be processed when both your transcript and the signed request for additionl credit form have been received by the Registrar's Office. Transfer credit will appear on your MIT record with a grade of S, rather than a letter grade. This grade is not used in computing your term or cumulative grade point average, but the credit will count toward your Institute requirements.
