Biological Engineering Major (MIT), Art History Major (Wellesley)
National Institutes of Health
I spent the summer at the NIH in Bethesda, MA. The NIH has 27 institutes and centers. I worked at the second largest institute - National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Within NIAID, the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) works with all infectious diseases except HIV. My experience at the NIH was enriching and rewarding. I helped draft recommendations from the NIH to the Global Immunization Working group of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee; worked on NIH's strategy regarding Lyme disease; conducted a literature review on the co-infection of Neglected Tropical Diseases and HIV, for a talk to be given at the AIDS2012 conference; and prepared the talk about category A pathogens to be submitted to the Presidential Commission on Bioethics. I was fortunate to work with a myriad of people, go to hearings and attend the AIDS2012 conference. Apart from the formal internship, the lectures in the evenings were fabulous. Washington DC, was a wonderful place to be over the summer, especially as an intern.
