InterAmerican Development Bank

Typically, the IDB funds large development projects in Latin America and the Caribbean through the public sector of the various countries. The Private Sector Department (PRI) was formed 5 years ago with the intent to lend to private companies doing large infrastructure projects. The project I am working on involves developing social and environmental guidelines for the construction and operation of these projects, specifically transportation projects.

My job involves collecting all the data on the social and environmental impacts of these projects and synthesizing them into and report that will indicate these impacts and mitigation measures for negative impacts. I have had to conduct interviews with experts, visit relevant organizations and do library and web research. I work together with my two supervisors to determine the content of the report and ultimately the department's policy concerning social and environmental issues.

Institute of Medicine - Board on Global Health

I have been working for the IOM's Board on Global Health. The Board identifies andaddresses priorities in developing country health, as well as the United States role in global health. The expert committees the Board assembles provide evidence-based recommendations to the U.S. government, international organizations, foundations, and non-governmental organizations.

The integrity of the IOM lies in its attention to unbiased scientific knowledge, so the recommendations it publishes are given substantial weight. The study I am working on examines nervous system disorders (psychiatric, neurological, and developmental) in developing countries. The increase in the global burden of nervous system disorders has gone hand in hand with the decline of infectious disease and infant mortality. Moreover, most developing countries are not preparing to address this preventable burden. For a background report for the committee, I am studying data on prevalence rates and health initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa. I collaborate with global experts in psychiatry, neurology, and epidemiology, many of whom are affiliated with the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the National Institutes of Health. I also correspond with experts from the developing countries and search the scientific literature. As someone who would like to pursue a career in international public health, this has been an amazing opportunity to familiarize myself with the field and network with leaders and experts.

World Bank

I am working at the World Bank in the Education Thematic Group of the Human Development Network. We are working on implementing programs that focus on school health and nutrition in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. These programs emphasize teacher training, deworming and micronutrient supplementation for the students, community participation, and partnerships with other organizations. The basic premise is that improving a child's health will have positive impacts on his or her performance in school. I have two main tasks this summer. The first is to write a report on the history and present status of specific School Health and Nutrition (SHN) programs in West Africa. The report also includes statistical data and graphs relevant to this area of research. The second task is to compile a list of current SHN programs in Haiti. These tasks have mostly required meeting with members of the World Bank and other organizations, such as USAID, reading reports, and doing web research.

International Trade in Health Care Systems - I am working on a study to examine the export of health care systems, particularly HMOs, to developing countries where there is little infrastructure to protect patients interests. this study will examine how HMOs are starting in developing countries, hospital contracting and purchasing, and quality of health care. Countries of interest include Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, India, and other Asian, Latin American, and eastern European countries. Health care services are needed to meet the needs of a rising middle class looking for higher quality health care than their governments can provide. Quality of health care and accessiblity are issues under review.

American Association for World Health

At the American Association for World Health, I am working on a World AIDS Day project. As part of that project, I, along with the other interns, am assisting in updating the World AIDS Resource Booklet that is distributed annually to people at the grassroots level. I have been writing new articles and stories based on web and other research, editing existing articles from last year's Booklet, and helping out with the layout for Booklet.
In addition to these tasks, I have been calling different state health and education departments, requesting information from them, and I've also been calling various AIDS agencies to update their information. Apart from the World AIDS project, I've been writing articles for the quarterly put out by the AAWH. I am given a variety of different sources from which I have to condense the material and present a one-paged article on a particular topic. I've written about topics such as TB, the World Health Organization, diabetes, and abortion in developing countries. Through my work on these articles and on the AIDS project, I am learning about many of the current health issues that are affecting people on a global level. I am now much more aware of the state of HIV/AIDS in the world, and I am always amazed about many of the statistics I come across in my research. The goal of the AAWH is to publish materials such as the AIDS Booklet and the quarterly and to get it into the hands of local leaders who can distribute them to people at the grassroots level to make people more aware of fundamental health issues and problems.

Institute of Medicine - Board on Global Health

I am working at the Board on Global Health at the National Academies' Institute of Medicine. My specific task is to develop a background paper for an upcoming project on global tobacco control. The IOM wants to provide information to Congress so they can develop an American position on the World Health Organization's upcoming Global Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The need for this convention is pressing. In 2025, ten million people will die per year of tobacco-caused illness, making it the world's biggest killer. About seventy percent of those deaths will occur in developing countries, where tobacco advertising is the most aggressive, and public health and education efforts are lacking. The Framework Convention will integrate resources from different nations to tackle the international smoking pandemic.

American Association for World Health

The American Association for World Health is a private, non-profit charitable and educational organization, which serves as the US Committee for the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. The purpose of AAWH is to inform the American public about major health challenges that affect people both here and abroad and to promote cooperative solutions that emphasize grassroots involvement.
AAWH annually promotes international health issues through activities such as World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World No-Tobacco Day, and World AIDS Day. My project has dealt with the World AIDS Day initiative. Each year a resource booklet about HIV/AIDS is published and distributed to community leaders all over the nation. The booklet is intended for use by leaders who wish to observe World AIDS Day and promote HIV/AIDS awareness and education at the grassroots level. In order to help develop the booklet (write, edit, layout), I have researched current statistics relevant to HIV/AIDS and other related materials. I have attended meetings with other HIV-related organizations in order to understand the top priorities and concerns of this issue. Additionally, I have started working on grant/funding information and proposals. The internship includes carrying out administrative duties as well. Overall, my experience here has helped me understand the challenge in relating information to those most affected by serious health issues and the urgency by which we need to promote awareness here and around the world.
