The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey
is conducted at hundreds of colleges and universities through out the
country. It is the nation's largest and longest running empirical
study of higher education. The University of Chicago participates
every other year. The results not only contribute to a national data
base that can track student attitudes and opinions over time, but they
also help us at the University understand how our own students compare
to those all over the country.  The Survey asks questions about high
school activities, goals for college, opinions on important issues,
and plans for after you graduate.

This year, an online version of this survey will be conducted by the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and coordinated by the Higher
Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los
Angeles.  We at the University of Chicago have provided your email
address and other information to these institutions for purposes of
conducting the survey.  You will have the opportunity at the end of
the survey to decide how much information about yourself you would
like to share with the researchers that oversee the survey and
administrators at the University of Chicago.  Your responses will be
completely confidential and no personally identifiable information
will be attributed to you without your explicit permission.

consists of nine linked sections; please complete all sections so that
we have a record of your full set of responses. This survey takes
