In just a few weeks, summer will be behind you and you will begin a
rewarding and exciting chapter in your life as a college student at
Columbia University in the City of New York!  Once again, I want to
extend my warmest welcome to you.  My staff and I look forward to
greeting you and your family here on campus. 

I am writing to enlist your support in completing the 2007 American
Freshman Survey.  The survey is part of a continuing national
longitudinal study of American college students since 1966. The survey
is administered simultaneously at many other prestigious private
universities in the United States, allowing Columbia to make valuable
comparisons with our peer institutions. Therefore, your participation
is critical to the success of this project.

confidential.  Individual responses are never released.  However, when
responding to Question #42, I urge you to give permission to include
your ID number in the data set. This will allow Columbia researchers
