SWRT:
Team
Charter
The Software Release Team, as part of
MIT Information Services and Technology,
is responsible for the release of supported
software to the MIT community. This encompasses
operating systems, utilities, and productivity
applications on the Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Mobile Devices platforms, including any necessary customizations
in application, packaging, distribution,
documentation, and training. The team relies
heavily on volunteers throughout the Institute
to assist with the requirements, evaluation
and recommendation of supported products.
Through the team's actions, we will promote
the use of standard, supported IT products
and services. This process involves on-going
product and service evaluations, identifying
and promoting supported products, selecting
appropriate distribution venues, and ensuring
products are easy to acquire, use and receive
assistance with. We will do this through
a well-publicized and documented release
cycle and ongoing communication efforts.
We will make informed decisions regarding
our priorities and objectives by monitoring
market trends,working closely with vendor
partners, and soliciting community input.
This will ensure that all stakeholders,
customers and IT support processes are
well-informed of our actions and ready
to receive a new or updated product when
it is released. Our efforts will have been
a success when the following goals are
met:
- The IS&T process for releasing supported
software is well known and accepted throughout
the MIT community. It is such a routine
part of campus life that it receives
little notice beyond its utilitarian
function.
- The process for keeping one's software
up-to-date is easy and straightforward.
A high percentage of the community is
able to download and install software
without having to rely on outside support.
It's easy to learn about and utilize
new features, and this enhances people's
work lives.
- IT partners and participating colleagues
within IS&T understand and are familiar
with the product release cycle, and this
allows them to integrate it into their
job functions and work plans with little
disruption.
- The team has a sufficient number of
volunteer Product Release Coordinators,
Installer Writers, and Testers so that
work can be done on schedule. As as a
result, MIT has a larger pool of employees
skilled in these areas, and participating
individuals are able to receive mentoring
and support toward their career development
goals.
