Comparatives (比較級)

Comparative constructions in Japanese can be made by adding もっと right before adjectives. Consider the following:

• これは、もっと面白いですよ。(This one is more interesting.)
• このケーキは、もっとおいしいですよ。(This cake is more delicious.)

• この本は、その本より 面白いです。
  (??この本は、その本より もっと面白いです。...sounds redundant)
• このケーキは、そのケーキよりおいしいです。
  (??このケーキは、そのケーキよりもっとおいしいです。)

Comparatives involve two items, and when you want to ask,
"which one is more ____, X and Y?", use the following pattern:

Q: 「X と Y では、どちらの方が _____ですか。」
A: 「X/Y の 方が ______です。」

Q:日本語と中国語では、どちらの方がむずかしいですか。
A:中国語の方がむずかしいです。

Q:パンとごはんでは、どちらの方が好きですか。
A:パンの方が好きです。

Like the case in superative constructions, you can use もっと or -より or -の方 together with adverbs. Examine the following:

• 田中さんは、山田さんよりもっと早く仕事をします。
• 山田さんは、もっとたくさん食べますよ。
• Q:田中さんと山田さんでは、どちらの方がたくさん飲みますか。
  A:山田さんの方が、たくさん飲みますよ。
