Honorific/Humble Expressions

When introducing your family members (including yourself), it is better to use humble forms. On the other hand, when asking someone about his or her family members, use honorific forms.

Honorific/Humble Forms that are used often in introducing family members are:

• 行く->いらっしゃる
• 来る->いらっしゃる

• する->いたす(いたします)
• 行く->参る(まいる)(参ります)

you have: 父、母、兄, who live in New York.

A: 「ご兄弟は、何人いらっしゃいますか。」
B: 「兄が、一人おります。」

A: 「ご家族は、どちらに住んでいらっしゃいますか。」
B: 「家族は、ニューヨークに住んでおります。」
