The current plans for the SGI are in flux. One of the possiblities is that pepe-lepew, which is an SGI, will be replaced by a SUN, the current standard server. The benefits of this move are (1) we would not have to hack a bootparamd. (2) operations feels confident about the machine. (3) mkserv exists so the could generate a mkserv script to regenerate the machine. The down side is we still would have to have a hacked bootp. A problem that exists no matter which platform we are on is that the bootparamd will reply to any requesting diskless workstation.
