Instructions and files for making a 7.6 install floppy are in ./21
Instructions for making 7.7 install floppy are in ./23
See ./23/cnboot.ps for information from Sun on how cnboot works, and
in particular how to set cnboot.defaults (you can edit that file before
creating running fd.install to put specific default values on the
diskette...as of today, it doesn't know how to construct a default gateway
from the host's IP address).
1. Make an install floppy (see OPTIONAL note below on customizing):
- login on an Athena Sun
- attach bootkit; cd /mit/bootkit/solarisinstall/23
- look at 23/cnboot.defaults to make sure the defaults look
sane; if you want something different, edit the file
- put a high-density diskette into the floppy dirve
- fdformat -U
- volcheck
- if there are no errors during the format,
fd.install /vol/dev/aliases/floppy0
(if vold is not running fd.install /dev/rdiskette)
2. How to use the install floppy to install Athena and Sun software:
1. Halt the machine to be installed.
2. At the PROM prompt type:
boot floppy (for SparcClassics, SparcStation 5)
boot /fd (for ipx machines)
3. Answer the questions (or take defaults):
a. The IP address of the machine you install
(if staged, the staging IP address)
b. The IP address of the gateway (18.subnet.0.1)
c. The IP address of the server
solar is the main one to use: 18.159.0.28
solar2 is the secondary: 18.159.0.21
d. The netmask (always 255.255.0.0)
NOTE: Until 7.7 is officially released, use
solar TO INSTALL 7.6 directly
solar2 TO INSTALL 7.7 directly
2'. After the floppy is ejected, you will see on the screen the question
Custom installation ? (will default to n in 60 seconds)
If you do not answer or answer n the current rev will be installed
(as of 8/15/96 8.0). If you answer y you will be asked :
Which rev do you want to install ?
If your answer is the previous rev (8/15/96 - 7.7)
you will install the machine with the previous release. For all other answers
the machine will be installed with the current release (8/15/96 - 8.0).
3. After installing in the staging area, or if the machine needs to be
moved to another (permanent address):
1. Take the machine off the network (disconnect ethernet cable)
2. Boot in single user mode ( boot -s )
3. Run /etc/athena/solaris_reconf which will prompt you for
the hostname and then reconfigure it.
4. Reboot the machine connected on the net
OPTIONAL Note:
[OPTIONAL] if you want to make special default values for the
boot floppy prompts (say, if you have to install lots of
workstations on the same subnet), save the file
/mit/bootkit/solarisinstall/23/cnboot.defaults then edit a new
one. MAKE SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT, BECAUSE YOU WON'T KNOW IT'S WRONG
UNTIL YOU TRY TO USE THE DISKETTE. Do this step before running
fd.install /dev/rdiskette
