Community Welcome to Terrascope!! We are an academic community of faculty, staff, and current and former students who enjoy learning together. We look forward to getting to know you. Meet some of the people who are here to help you: TerrascopeDirector: Rafael L. Bras, Edward A. Abdun-Nur Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty in Mission 2011 (our fall semester subject) is taught Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, Sam Bowring with Professor Bras' participation as well. Prof. Bras and Dr. Ari Epstein teach the required spring subject, 1.016. Dr. Epstein also teaches our CI-H subject, Terrascope Radio. Other faculty or researchers often participate in these courses, so you will be exposed to a wide range of ideas and approaches. As the Terrascope community is small, you will have the chance to get to know faculty and staff in a way not always possible in larger freshman subjects at MIT. This means that you will have an advantage in finding UROPs, summer internships, or other opportunities. The Terrascope Program is a program of MIT's Office of Experiential Learning, under the auspices of the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education. As the program was developed jointly by the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth and Planetary Science, you will find that faculty teaching in the program are drawn from both departments (course 1 and course 12). Freshmen dvisors who work with Terrascope students are drawn from these two departments as well as others in the Institute. Program Administrator: Debra Aczel Administrative Assistant: Ruth Weinrib Our community includes a growing body of alumni/ae--students who've participated in Terrascope, or Mission, in previous semesters. They are here to help in Mission 2011 or 1.016 as Teaching Fellows, or as tutors in your science core subjects. You will also find that they participate in social activities and are available for advice, should you need it. As a Terrascope student, you'll have access to our beautiful facilities located on the first floor of building 16: kitchen, classroom, and lounge. |
