1.016 - Earth System Engineering and Science

1.016 - Communicating Complex Environmental Issues: Designing and Building Interactive Museum Exhibits (9 units) builds on the material covered in fall, and is designed to develop additional depth in science concepts as well as introduce engineering and design process. Specifically, you will work with a small team to design, engineer, and build an interactive museum-style exhibit that teaches others about some aspect of the topic studied in fall. Museum design professionals consult on design development and critique final projects. Exhibits are opened to the public at the end of the semester. Many of past year's exhibit components have been adopted for use by museums, including the Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach, California), the Science Discovery Museum (Acton, Massachusetts), and Needham Science Center (Needham, Massachusetts). Work done in 1.016 has in past semesters led some participants to develop Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) projects focused on communicating science topics to the general public.

1.016 is offered in spring, and is mandatory for all Terrascope students.

Spring break field component - As a student in the Terrascope program will have the opportunity to conduct field research during spring break in a location relevant to their year's work. In the past, Terrascope students have done work in the Brazillian Amazon, Alaska, the Galapagos Archipelago, Chile, and most recently, New Orleans. You must be enrolled in Terrascope's spring subject, 1.016, in order to participate in the spring trip.
