I graduated from MIT in 1998 with an SB in course 21-S (humanities and science) concentrating in biology and science writing. Yup, a bachelor of science from MIT in writing.
I teach at MIT, both in the Experimental Study Group and the Department of Writing and Humanistic Studies. So far I've taught 5.111 (Introductory Chemistry,) 7.013 (Introductory Biology,) and helped to teach 21W.739J (Darwin and Design,) 7.17 (Biology Project Lab,) and 24.202 (Early Modern Philosophy Descartes-Kant.)
In the past, I've been a technical writer and a research fellow in a neurobiology lab. I did research on potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease in the lab of Dr. Vernon Ingram (who has just been elected to the National Academy of Sciences! Yay!)
I have an amateur radio license; my callsign is KB1DQZ, or, in Morse code, "-.- -... .---- -.. --.- --.."
Care and feeding: I can't eat meat (except fish) without getting sick. Large amounts of milkfat or hydrogenated fat also make me sick. Kind of ridiculous, isn't it?
I'm not a morning person.
My most distinguishing feature is that no matter what I do to my appearance, I look like a prim little librarian. I cut my own hair.
