We joined a group of Geology undergrads from Cornell University, led by Professors Alex Moore and Lou Derry. Heraldo Farrington, researcher at Stanford Professor Peter Virtousek's Magma Lab (on Mt. Kilawea) took both Cornell's and MIT's group on a hike through the foothills of Mona Kea, studying forest evolution. We studied forest evolution as we hiked over lava flows from the 1800's, 1880's, and 1950's.

We stayed for five nights in Kalopa State Recreation Area near Honoka'a.
