WRITING REQUIREMENT DEADLINES

Freshman Essay Evaluation Deadline

All freshmen who have not completed Phase One prior to entering MIT are required to take the Freshman Essay Evaluation during Residence/Orientation Week. In 1997, the Freshman Essay Evaluation will be administered on Friday, August 22, at 9 a.m.

Phase One Deadlines

Students have until the second Monday in October of their third term at MIT to submit a Phase One paper and cover sheet to the instructor of the subject for which the paper was written. Students have until the first Monday in November of their third term at MIT to submit an approved paper or a revision of a previously submitted paper to the Writing Requirement Office. Thus, a student who is a first-semester sophomore in the Fall of 1997 will have until Monday, October 13 to submit the paper to the subject instructor and will have until Monday, November 3 to turn in a paper to the Writing Requirement. Papers that are scored "Not Acceptable" on first submission may be revised and resubmitted twice. If a sophomore is notified after the second Monday in October (in 1997, October 13) that a Phase One paper is not acceptable, he or she will have three weeks from the date of the notification letter to submit a revision. (If this is a first revision, the student will have a second opportunity to revise, again with a three-week deadline.)

Any student who has not completed Phase One by the end of his or her third semester at the Institute must satisfy it by enrolling in an Approved Phase One Writing Subject and being certified by the instructor as having completed Phase One (in most cases, students completing such a subject with a grade of B- or better will be so certified).

Phase Two Deadlines

Phase Two must be completed by Registration Day of the term in which a student is to graduate. Registration Day for Fall term 1997 is Tuesday, September 2. Registration for Spring term 1998 is Monday, February 2. Thus, all students who wish to be on the February 1998 degree list must have completed Phase Two -- that is, submitted a paper, had it evaluated, made any revisions suggested by the evaluator, and had it judged Passing, OR completed an Approved Phase Two Writing Subject with a grade of B- or better -- by Monday, September 2. Students who wish to be on the June 1998 degree list must have completed Phase Two by Monday, February 2.

The deadline for submitting Phase Two Papers for evaluation is much earlier. Consult your Major Department for the exact date.

Students who have not completed Phase Two by Registration Day of their last term at the Institute may still graduate at the end of that term, but only if they petition the Committee on the Writing Requirement to be allowed to remain on the final degree list, and enroll in an Approved Phase Two Writing Subject and complete it with a grade of B- or better.

Petition Deadlines

For seniors who have not completed Phase One or Two, or both, by Registration Day of their intended final semester at MIT, the deadline for Petitioning the Committee on the Writing Requirement is the Friday of the first week of classes of that semester (thus, September 5 for Fall semester 1997 and February 6 for Spring semester 1998).

For all other students, there is no absolute deadline for petitioning the Committee; however, the sooner you petition, the better the chances that your petition will be approved. The Committee rarely approves petitions that should have been submitted in previous years.
