About MIT United Christian Fellowship

Intro

We are a group of students who are interested in discovering more about Jesus Christ, and seeking to serve and follow him in our lives here at MIT. While we come from different backgrounds and may attend different churches, we do share the common desire to grow in faith, to encourage each other in the Christian walk, and to have God's name be glorified on the MIT campus.

UCF is a chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (an interdenominational college ministry found on over 500 campuses nationwide), and it is one of the sixteen groups in United Christian Organization (i.e. UCF is a proper subset of UCO).

Purpose of UCF

In response to God's love, grace, and truth: The purpose of MIT United Christian Fellowship is to be a witnessing community of students who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world.

InterVarsity and other Affiliations

MIT UCF is a chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, an interdenominational campus ministry found on many college campuses, related to the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. United Christian Fellowship is only one of the InterVarsity-related groups at MIT. The others are Asian Christian Fellowship and Graduate Christian Fellowship.

Locally, UCF is a part of United Christian Organization, which is a conglomeration of approximately seventeen Christian fellowships on campus who occasionally meet together, most specifically for the purpose of freshman orientation.

UCF started by then-MIT students in the late 1940s relatively soon after the InterVarsity student movement came to the United States. We acquired our present name in the 1960's when the InterVarsity group and the Baptist group on campus combined to form one united Christian fellowship to help serve the campus with the Gospel. Since then, UCF has been joined by many other Christian fellowships on campus, many who collaborated to form United Christian Organization in the early 1990s.

Our Statement of Faith

Here is a brief statement of the faith that we specifically stand for as an organization.

  • the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ
  • the necessity and efficacy of the of the substitutionary death of Jesus for the redemption of the world, and the historic fact of His bodily resurrection.
  • the unique divine inspiration, entire trustworthiness and authority of the Bible.
  • the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the work of regeneration.
  • the expectation of the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What U.C.F. Stands for

United:

God calls Christians to unity in Jesus Christ, and we are committed to that connectedness as a part of his body, whether in the universal church, the local church, or the campus fellowship. UCF is a non-denominational, multi-ethnic, student-led fellowship. We seek to follow Jesus ourselves and invite inquirers and seekers to learn about the good news and to join in worshipping and serving Him. We are striving to promote unity among the Christian community at MIT.

As a chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (U.S.A.) we also are united with fellowships on 700 other campuses around the country, including many in the Boston area; and through the I.F.E.S. with national student movements in 120 countries around the world.

Christian:

We believe that our relationship to Jesus Christ is the most important aspect of our life while at MIT. Therefore we seek to put Jesus first in our studies, our work, our relationships, and all other aspects of our lives. In addition, we hope to share the good news of the gospel with those around us.

Fellowship:

There is much to be gained from fellowship with other believers. It is wonderful to have Christian brothers and sisters right on campus that are always willing to pray with you when you need help or when God is doing great things in you or through you.

Being part of a Christian community on campus also stretches us to develop godly relationships with those we see each day and gives us opportunities to love and serve our fellow brothers and sisters. Although our fellowship offers many things, we are no substitute for the local church. We encourage Christians in our fellowship to receive pastoral leadership by being involved with a local church.

Bringing the whole gospel to the whole campus to impact the whole world
