MEETING MINUTES
10/31/06
1. Joint Panel w/ Harvard
Harvard would like to collaborate with the MIT UEA to sponsor a large public event next semester.
Topic: Health Economics
Naa, Silvia, and Frances have volunteered to help organize the event. Professor Gruber has agreed to speak. There will be two events spread out during the spring term.
2. Fall social event
We will have the Course 14 Fiesta again this year on either Tuesday Nov. 28th or Thursday Nov 30. The party will be from 6-8 pm. We will try to reserve the Bush Room, with 20 Chimneys as an alternate room.
3. Curriculum feedback process
The department is interested in feedback on the changes in the curriculum. The UEA will conduct a paper survey in the near future during recitations for 14.04 and 14.05. We will also provide snacks during the recitations to encourage people to attend and fill out surveys. Additionally we will start a web forum to discuss the changes.
4. Faculty lunch lotteries
Professor Stephen Ryan 12-1 on Friday, Nov 3, room E52-398
Professor Panle Jia 12-1 on Tuesday, Nov 7
Candidates for future lunches include John Gruber, Esther Duflo, Sarah Ellison, and Peter Diamond. Email the UEA with nominations for lunches as well as to sign up to attend a faculty lunch.
5. IAP panel – recent alum contacts
The Department wants to know what recent graduates of course 14 have been doing. There will be an event held during IAP to inform undergraduates of possibilities after graduation.
6. Miscellaneous
We want to hold a TA mixer and an event with Gary King, possibly in early February. We need volunteers to organize these events.
The UEA will be reprinting course 14 cards like last year to promote the department.

Acemoglu/Duflo Development Lecture
-- April 24th 4-5:30 pm, E51-335
-- The Undergraduate Economics Association (UEA) is sponsoring a Development Economics lecture by Professors Esther Duflo and Daron Acemoglu. They will be discussing important topics in development economics today including growth potential, what policies might help, what drives growth, where the current research questions lie, etc. A Q&A session as well as a reception will follow the lecture.

-- We will be soliciting nominations for your favorite TA and Prof soon.

Last Friday's UEA meeting was yet another fun-filled productive one with topics including...
1) "Economists Supply It On Demand" OR "Talk to the Invisible Hand" T-shirt -- Stay tuned for preliminary designs and voting.
2) Professor Luncheons in April with Profs. Autor and Finkelstein
3) UEA-sponsored forum on development featuring Profs. Acemoglu and Duflo ~ coming in April
4) New Freshmen Advising Seminar in Econ [mitral]
Other new ideas and initiatives include:
1) TA Group Luncheons [send us TAs you wish to dine with]
2) How can we recruit more economics majors?
-- reduce the stigma of a social science at MIT
-- stress the use of math, statistics, and programming as key components
-- showcase research opportunities with Prize-winning faculty
-- do this through showcase cards for CPW, Open Houses, Dept. Recruiting, etc...
The first lunch meeting of Spring '06 was well attended. Here's what we discussed:
1) Looking into setting up speaker events with the head of the NYSE and author of Freakonomics.
2) Professor Luncheons to resume this term.
- Lunch with Professor Holmstrom Friday 2/24, 12pm, E52-398.
- Email lagha@mit.edu by Monday, Feb 20th to enter the lottery.
3) T-shirts -- pre-order Econ shirts on the homepage. Also, consider new slogans?
4) MIT-Harvard UEA sponsored Economics Forum in the works.
- Harvard plans to invite Professors to speak on Social Security.
- We may consider inviting MIT Professors to speak on Development.
5) CPW Economics Reception for parents and/or students, possible joint Social Sciences Info Reception @ the Faculty Club
6) Economics Advising Reform
- Want to encourage advisers and associate advisers to take on more structured role other than just signing forms
- Initiate adviser open office hours a few times per term

2) Potential Speakers for the rest of term include John Thain, John Reed, Laura Tyson, Joseph Stiglitz
3) Harvard's UEA has contacted us to collaborate on speaker and social events. We're sending representative to look into it.
4) There are only a handful of course T-shirts left; if interested, please email veenar (at) mit.edu.
We've reserved Lobby 10 for Nov 8th to sell a new order of t-shirts that we will be placing soon with more sizes and fit!
