Your undergraduate education should not consist solely of academics. You also need to keep yourself physically active and healthy. Getting involved with athletics, team sports, or simply exercising are great ways to blow off some steam.

Participation in team sports, in particular, gives you opportunities to develop to build leadership, teamwork, and communications skills.

  • Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER): DAPER fosters the growth of the competitively active student, while keeping sight of the Institute’s academic standards. DAPER brings students, faculty, and staff together in educational activities that promote healthy lifestyles, enhance a sense of community, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence.

    • The Physical Education Program: Over 60 different class are offered. PE program staff are available to answer questions you may have with regard to the Physical Education Requirement.

    • Athletics: You can participate in intramural sports, varsity teams, and club sports.

      • Intramural Sports: With a number of sports and over 2000 teams, the Intramural Sports program gives you the opportunity to participate in sports for competition or just for fun. Through participation in IM sports you can not only gain experience working with a team, but also have a recreational opportunity that provides an outlet from your academic pursuits.

      • Varsity Sports: There are a variety of varsity sports options for both men and women at MIT.

      • Club Sports: Many more sports are available as club sports, including: Archery, American Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense, Aikido, Ballroom Dance, Cycling, Cheerleading, Boxing, Badminton, Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Crew, Figure Skating Club, Isshinryu Karate-do, Volleyball, Women's Waterpolo, Women's Ice Hockey, Judo, Karate, Kendo, Kokikai, Korean Karate, Rugby, Shotokan Karate, Snowboarding, Graduate Men's Soccer, Taekwondo, Synchronized Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Triathlon and Ultimate Frisbee.     • Recreation: Tired of exercising in your dorm room? Looking for some instruction to help you work out more effectively? Then consider the resources that the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center (Z-Center) has to offer! Center facilities include: a variety of exercise and weight-training equipment; a 50 meter pool complete with dive area, a teaching pool, and spectator gallery; plus the Johnson Athletic Center; Rockwell Cage; and the David Flett duPont Athletic Center.

  • MIT Medical: Good physical health is of paramount importance. How do you expect to do your best work unless you are healthy and happy? MIT Medical offers a number of services to meet your physical and mental health needs. Explore the MIT Medical web site today to learn more.

    • Health and Fitness Programs Classes at MIT Medical: The Center for Health Promotion and Wellness sponsors a wide range of low-cost wellness classes, including yoga, meditation, weight management, fitness, and many others.   • Student Support Services: Counseling deans provide personal counseling and make referrals for those suffering with depression, learning disabilities, relationship problems, and more.
