Adding and Updating Pages

The current MIT Search Engine (Inktomi) is now documented at http://web.mit.edu/search/help/

Ultraseek's index runs continously, periodically revisiting pages, and indexing new web content. The indexer is "smart", in that it will revisit pages that change frequently more often than pages that rarely change over time.

If you want to see the status of your page in the engine's index, you can do so at the URL Status page. The status page will provide information on when the page is scheduled to be revisited, what description accompanies the page, and which document referred your page.

In addition, if you do make significant changes to your existing pages, or you create new pages that you want indexed, you can submit the URL for more immediate queuing on the Add URL page. This will alert the engine to the presence of your new or updated pages, and queue it for prompt revisiting. The time it takes is usually very short, but will depend on the engine's load. To see if your pages have been updated, you can search for your pages using the url: field, e.g. url:web.mit.edu\webmaster.html.
