The Constitution of the Undergraduate Mathematics Association

Article I: Purpose

The Undergraduate Mathematics Association (UMA) is a community of undergraduate students at MIT who share an interest in mathematics. The UMA serves to connect students of mathematics with each other and with faculty, as well as to help students explore mathematics and promote mathematics in the community.

Article II: Membership

  1. Any member of the MIT community is eligible to become a member of the organization. One is considered an active member of this organization in any given academic term if he has attended at least one club activity and one meeting in the preceding or current term.
  2. The membership of this organization at all times will contain at least 5 MIT undergraduate students and be more than half MIT students.
  3. This organization will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement.
  4. If this organization charges any monetary dues, there will be exceptions made for students that cannot afford these dues.

Article III: Officers

  1. This organization will have six officers:
    1. President
      1. The president shall be the official representative of the group to any other organization and to MIT.
      2. The president will preside over all meetings.
      3. The president is responsible for determining when meetings are and publicizing this to the group.
    2. Vice President (Relations)
      1. The vice president shall be in charge of establishing and maintaining relations between the group and MIT students, staff, and faculty.
      2. In the absence of the president, the vice president shall preside over all meetings.
    3. Treasurer
      1. The treasurer shall be responsible for the finances of the group.
      2. The treasurer is required to sign all checks/vouchers of the group.
      3. The treasurer is required to handle reimbursements so as to serve as the liaison between students in the club spending money and the people paying for the reimbursements.
    4. Secretary
      1. The secretary shall be responsible for taking minutes at each UMA meeting.
      2. The secretary shall be responsible for adding / deleting members from the mailing lists uma-announce@mit.edu and uma-jobs@mit.edu.
    5. Webmaster
      1. The webmaster shall develop and maintain the group website.
      2. The webmaster shall update the website regularly, so that the contents of the website shall be no more than a week old at any given point in time.
    6. Publicity chair
      1. The publicity chair shall be responsible for publicizing weekly talks, special events, and in general, any important information that may be relevant to members of the UMA.
  2. All officers of this organization must be distinct persons and MIT students.
  3. Elections:
    1. Elections of officers shall occur at the final general meeting of the term.
    2. Any member of this organization is eligible to run for office.
    3. All executive members must be present for an election.
    4. Any member is elected if he or she wins a majority of the voting members.
    5. If more than two people are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast.
    6. The term of office runs from June 1 of the year of election until May 31 the following year.
    7. Removal: Officers may be removed by a two-thirds vote of active membership.

Article IV: Meetings

  1. Officer meetings shall be held frequently, at minimum once every two weeks. All officers shall attend all meetings to the best of their abilities.
  2. Meetings shall be presided over by the president, unless he is absent, in which case the vice president shall preside.

Article V: Supporting the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament

The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) is an organization which is distinct from and supported by the UMA. As HMMT is not an official MIT student group, the UMA serves to give HMMT access to privileges and rights of MIT student groups as necessary, such as reserving rooms for the tournament.

Article VI: Amendments

1. Amendments to the constitution must be approved by one-half of officers.

Article VII: God Clause

The Undergraduate Mathematics Association agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
