1. Brief Introduction to PowerTrans
-----------------------------------

PowerTrans is the very first multilingual dictionary for the Newton
   with integrated vocabulary learning mode.

PowerTrans is based on a comfortable dictionary, which allows
entering new words, changing and deleting words. All functions are
also accessible from a overview mode. All words can be assigned to
   grammatical categories.

The powerful learning function allows the flexible and determined
learning of user chosen words from the dictionary. Any word in
dictionary can be marked for learning. PowerTrans takes the
individual learning skill of the user into account. With a daily time
of 30 minutes you can learn 1000 to 2000 words per month in a
   effortless way.

The filter function allows you to access a specific subrange of a
   language.

This version contains four languages: English, German, Spanish
and French (1700 words per language). You are able to access
translations between each of these languages.

PowerTrans allows a arbitrary number of languages, which can be
configured by the user. Languages can be located on a Storage Card
or on Internal Storage, since PowerTrans supports all Storage Card
   functions.

PowerTrans vocabulary files can be created or extended with a text
editor on PC, Macintosh, OS/2 and UNIX platforms. They can be
transferred in both directions between your Newton and a desktop
computer by using a terminal program. PowerTrans supports the Xmodem
protocol for a secure data transfer.

7. Using the Electronic Manual
------------------------------

The PowerTrans manual 'manual.pdf' is initially available as a
   Adobe Acrobat file (with bookmarks, hypertext links; searchable;
printable) other specific formats like Microsoft Word and DocViewer
are not likely since Acrobat, HTML and NewtonBooks should be more
   useful, common and portable.

Why Acrobat? Acrobat Reader is a viewer application for Adobe's
   family of products based on PDF (Portable Document Format) files;
the release includes readme, help and sample documents; other
products are Exchange and Distiller. The PDF format and Acrobat API
are published. PDF files are compact and cross-platform compatible.
FREE versions of Reader are available for Macintosh, Windows, Unix
and DOS. If you don't already have the Acrobat Reader, you need to
download it from Adobe. I highly recommend to print out this manual.

Acrobat Reader (2.1) is available from:

   [CompuServe:CIS]
GO ACROBAT or GO ADOBE, "Download Acrobat Viewer"
      (Macintosh, Windows, DOS)

   [Internet]
      ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Acrobat/Macintosh,
                                                      Windows, DOS, UNIX

   [America Online:AOL]
Computing: Application or Electronic Publishing (Macintosh)
PC Forums:Windows:Text & Word Programs (Windows)

   Macintosh SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
      - Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series)
        or higher processor
      - MacOS 7.0 or higher
      - 2 MB application RAM
      - 4 MB hard disk space

   Windows SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
      - 386- or 486-based personal computer (486 recommended)
      - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher
      - 4 MB application RAM
      - 4 MB hard disk space

8. Installing and Getting Started
---------------------------------

   1) Introduction

We recommend to read the electronic manual 'manual.pdf' for a
detail description of installing and getting started.

First install the package 'powertr.pkg' on your Newton. Use the
      Apple Newton Connection Kit.

Before you can use PowerTrans for the first time, you have to set
      up at least two languages.

Next you can enter words yourself or import words from the
      accompanied vocabulary.

   2) Setting up a language

      * Tap on one of the language buttons on the Status Bar at the
bottom of the screen. If you didn't already set up a language
the caption "<none>" is shown on the buttons.

      * Select "New..." in the language picker.

      * Tap on "Language ID" and select the desired language from the
list. To scroll through more entries of the list use the ">Next>"
and "<Prev<" entries. If the desired language isn't predefined in
the list, you can select from "Lang0" to "Lang9" instead.
Languages already chosen are marked with a leading "/", e.g.
"/English", and cannot be selected a second time. You should
select your mother tongue the first time.

      * You may change the language description in the input field if
you want another description for the language. The language
description is among other things used for the caption of the
language buttons in the Status Bar.

      * Tap on [X] to close the dialog or "Cancel" to abort the set up
        process.

   3) Importing vocabularies via Xmodem-Protocol

You need a terminal program on your desktop PC/MAC for transfering
data. Furthermore your desktop PC has to be connected with a
serial cable to your Newton. You should use the same cable provided
      with Newton Connection Kit.

Read the manual chapter of your terminal program regarding the
transfer of binary data. PowerTrans is using the Xmodem protocol
for the data transfer. This protocol ensures that all information
is safely transfered between your desktop PC and your Newton.
Therefore you should only use terminal programs which are capable
      of the Xmodem protocol.

Set up the following parameters in your terminal program:
      * Com Port settings: 9600 Baud or 57600 Baud, 1 Stopbit, no parity.
      * no Hardware Handshake, no Data Compression, XON/XOFF disabled.
      * If your terminal program supports several Xmodem variants:
Do not use Xmodem-1kB or Xmodem/CRC. PowerTrans uses Xmodem with
128 Byte Blocks/Checksum. The CRC option is not supported by
PowerTrans. If your are in doubt you should just try the
different Xmodem variants, PowerTrans will only transfer valid
        data in any case.

Use the supplied vocabulary files for importing. It is recommended
that you use a small vocabulary file for the first data transfer.
Therefore start with one of the vocabulary files consisting of 100
      words.

      * Start a terminal program (Xmodem file transfer) on your desktop
PC/MAC and select a vocabulary file.

      * Select a source and destination language combination on your
Newton which matches the language combination of the selected
        file on your desktop PC/MAC.
See also: "Selecting a Source Language" and "Selecting a
        Destination Language".

      * Tap on the action button in the Status Bar and select
        "Import..." from the picker list.

      * Select the data transfer speed here.

      * Set the desired data transfer speed in the dialog. The selected
data transfer speed must match the configuration of your
terminal program on your desktop computer.

      * Next start the data transfer on your desktop PC by choosing
"Send File" or a similar command.

      * Tap on [X] to start the data transfer or "Cancel" to abort the
        import.

The data transfer between your desktop PC and your Newton will now
start. If your terminal program shows three block repetitions
right at the beginning of the connection followed by a error
message, this is normal behaviour as long as the further transfer
runs without errors. This is due to the fact that many terminal
programs test if CRC is supported by PowerTrans right at the
      beginning of the transfer.

If the connection gets interrupted during import for some reasons,
simply restart the transfer. Since PowerTrans handles the import
function similar to the manual entry of new words, only words not
already present on your Newton will be imported.

9. Future Enhancements for PowerTrans
-------------------------------------

When the first announcement for PowerTrans was released, I received
a lot of email with the question what the future PowerTrans updates
   will contain:

   * The number of words of all languages will be increased to more
than 10.000 words/language (English, Spanish, German and French)
   * A Newton OS2 compatible version will be released as soon as
     possible.
   * Folders will be supported
   * Better performance
   * Language specific versions for German, Spanish and French
   * Statistical functions for the learning mode
   * Voice output

Send us an email if you have any suggestions you would like to be
considered for the next versions of PowerTrans.
If you want to be informed on news, please send us an email also.

10. Terminal Programs Supporting Xmodem-protocol
------------------------------------------------

  [Win3.1]
The Windows3.1 Terminal program is not able to send files by
Xmodem-protocol (import). Receiving works fine (export).

     Programs supporting Xmodem protocoll:

     * Procomm Plus 2.1, Datastorm Technologies, UK (Win3.1, WIN95)
     * Telix 1.10a, ELSA GmbH, Germany (Win3.1)
     * Smartcom 1.0c, Hayes, UK (Win3.1)
     * Unicom 4.0, Data Graphics, USA (Win3.1)
     * Telemate 1.0, White River Software, CAN, (Win3.1), Shareware

  [WIN95]
The original HypetTerminal from Hilgrave on the WIN95-CD has a bug
receiving files by Xmodem-protocol (export). If a transmission
occurs HyperTerminal exceeds error count, because it is not able
to do retransmission. Sending files works fine (import).

Use the update-version from Hilgrave which you can download free:
     ftp://www.hilgraeve.com/pub/vendor/hilgraeve/htpe1.zip ~630kB

  [Macintosh]
PowerTrans was tested with Black Night 1.0.1

  [OS/2]
     * ZOC 2.13, EmTec GmbH, Germany, Shareware
     * Live Wire/WPS 3.1, Data Mirage Software, USA, Shareware
     * PMComm 2.32, Multi-Net Communications, USA

If you have any problems with these or other terminal-programs
  please email us.

11. Where to Get Cheap PCMCIA-Flash Cards?
-----------------------------------------

PowerTrans depends on external PCMCIA Storage Cards for storing large
vocabularies. You will be able to hold about 6000-7000 Words on 1 MB
  of storage space.

Insiders expect the prices for PCMCIA Flash Memory Cards will fall
dramatically. The cheapest cards I know of can be obtained from the
  following address:

     TecSys GmbH
     Karl-Theodor-Strasse 55
     80803 Muenchen
     Germany

     phone: +49 (0)89 3071096
     fax: +49 (0)89 3072165

If you order a Flash Card, tell them that you need it for the Newton.

For example they sell a 16MB Flash Card for 874,00 DM (~600 USD).
If you know cheaper sources, please tell us.

12. Distributing Your Own Vocabulary Files
------------------------------------------

It is our goal to provide as many languages and vocabularies as
possible in the near future to make PowerTrans a popular application
   for the Newton.

We will support everybody who plans to publish languages for
