Supervisor Funding

When faculty supervisors pay your UROP wages, MIT requires them to pay indirect costs in addition to what you actually earn: (currently the overhead at a rate of 68% is charged on all wages). For example: if you receive a $1,000 stipend, it will cost your faculty supervisor $1,680. Faculty who pay students' UROP stipends may choose to pay more than the standard UROP stipend and set a higher hourly rate of pay. They may not pay less than the UROP hourly rate (set at $9.25 for 2008-09).

Sponsored research proposals for the fall, spring and summer are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Missing evaluations and other omitted information will delay the approval of your proposal. Projects begun in the fall term with sponsored research funding may continue during IAP, and projects begun during IAP with sponsored research funding may continue into the spring term. Proposals for faculty-funded UROPs for Pay that begin during IAP should be submitted before the official IAP start date.

If overtime hours in a faculty-funded UROP are likely or necessary, you should make certain, in advance, that your supervisor is aware of these overtime hours and that there are enough funds to cover the cost.

NOTE: If you are an international student, you may not work more than 40 hours/week. Contact staff in the International Students Office with any questions or for additional information on restrictions.

Approval Notification

Allow 1-2 weeks for the UROP staff to process your request. Approval notification may take longer if your application is missing required information. You will receive email from UROP staff if your proposal is incomplete (i.e. if feedback on previous UROP work is missing, your proposal lacks sufficient detail, etc.). Missing information will also be flagged in your online application and you can check your application status at any time by visiting your UROP homepage. Call UROP staff at x3-7306 or send an email to urop@mit.edu with any questions that you may have regarding the status of your proposal.

If you are approved for supervisor funding, your approval email will contain pertinent information regarding timesheets and payments. You must visit the office of the UROP payroll coordinator listed in this email, ASAP, upon receipt of the message, so that your UROP can be activated in the payroll system.
