Center for Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE)
The Center for Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) has a special mission: to foster collaborative interdisciplinary research and education in the fundamental science of materials and in the engineering of materials for specific applications. CMSE not only promotes collaboration among MIT faculty trained in different disciplines, but also between MIT researchers and the researchers of other universities, industry, and government and non-profit laboratories. Interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs), supported by CMSE, are composed of MIT faculty, who, with their students and postdoctoral associates, wish to investigate fundamental scientific questions and pathways to reach significant technological goals that can only be properly explored in a collaborative, multidisciplinary mode. CMSE also funds seed projects led by individual faculty.
Because the list of faculty supported by the Center varies with shifts in research emphasis, students should consult the CMSE web site for the most accurate information. Descriptions of current research performed with CMSE support can be accessed at that site as well.
Note: CMSE has limited funding for UROP students. Consequently, after consulting with a faculty supervisor, each student should submit a proposal with cover sheet to Ms. Rosevear as soon as possible.
Safety
The Center requires everyone working in a lab to pass a safety test administered by CMSE. The UROP Coordinator will approve proposals only for students who present evidence of having passed this test. Safety Contact: Mr. Edward Kruzel, 13-2090, x3-6814, elk@mit.edu
Further Information
Contact Ms. Susan Rosevear in 13-3090, x3-0916, susang@mit.edu .
