Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS)
The Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS) provides support for research by faculty and research staff members primarily in the fields of basic nuclear and elementary particle physics, including the activities of the Center for Theoretical Physics (CTP) in these fields. In addition, it provides a computing facility for its research programs. The largest local experimental effort is in intermediate energy nuclear physics, centered at the Bates Linear Accelerator Center in Middleton, Massachusetts. In addition to faculty-supervised research at the Center, there are also opportunities in detector and instrumentation development as well as in Accelerator Physics. The Laboratory also has programs in experimental nuclear physics at several off-campus accelerator laboratories.
In high energy physics, there are major projects in the U.S. at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Palo Alto, California and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) in Batavia, Illinois. Abroad there are experiments at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland. Much of the preparation for, and analysis of, these experiments takes place on the MIT campus.
