UROP
Options for
Wellesley
College Students
As a cross-registered
Wellesley
College student,
you have two
main UROP
participation
options; UROP
for Pay and
UROP for Credit.
You may also
elect to participate
in UROP as
a volunteer,
provided that
you follow
all applicable
UROP guidelines.
Your options
are outlined
below for
quick reference.
If you need
help with
any step of
the UROP cross-registration
process, please
see MIT UROP
staff in the
Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP)
for guidance
and details.
We're available
Monday-Friday
from 9AM-5PM
EST (except Institute
holidays)
in Room 7-104.
You can also
reach us at
617-253-7306
or at urop@mit.edu.
UROP
for Pay for
Wellesley
Students
As a Wellesley
student, you
are not eligible
for direct
support from
UROP at MIT.
However, supervisor
funding is
allowed if
the faculty
supervisor
agrees to
fund you.
To apply
for a UROP,
you need to
complete a proposal and coversheet.
In addition,
you must cross-register
using the
Wellesley
Cross-registration
form and complete
an MIT Registration
Form for one
unit of Wellesley
Paid UROP
(URW) credit
in your faculty
supervisor's
academic department.
On your proposal
coversheet
, you must
enter a total
stipend amount,
rate per hour,
and an account
number in
the required
line. The
minimum hourly
rate is $9.25/hr.
This stipend
is your overall
expected earnings,
but does not
include additional
indirect costs
to faculty
(currently
set at 68%).
When your
paperwork
(proposals,
cross registration
forms, and evaluations
from previous
UROPs)
is completed
and approved,
you will receive
an email indicating
that your
approval letter
is ready for
pick-up in
the UAAP.
This letter
will authorize
you to receive
timecards
and paychecks.
Wellesley
Summer Research
Grants
The Wellesley
College Science
Center Summer
Research Program
supports ten
weeks of research
by Wellesley
students.
Note that
Wellesley's
summer funding
deadline is
around the
last week
in February,
much earlier
than MIT's
summer UROP
deadline.
Information
describing
these awards
is available
late in the
fall term.
How
to Apply: The
application
process
is described
at http://www.wellesley.edu/ScienceCenter/Students/students.html

M. Smith,

of the Wellesley
Science Center,

Academic
Credit for
Wellesley
Students
During the
academic year,
you may receive
MIT academic
credit for
your UROP
research.
UROP credit,
like all other
forms of MIT
credit, must
be added via
the cross-registration
procedures
described
above before
the applicable Registration
deadlines.
To do a UROP
for credit,
you must cross-register
for the appropriate
number of
UROP credit
units in your
faculty supervisor's
academic department.
More information
is available
from UROP
staff in the
Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming
(Room
7-104) or
at the Wellesley
College Exchange
Office.
Wellesley
College usually
views a UROP
project as
equal to one
of its "350" independent
study courses.
Although you
may take any
number of
independent
study courses
commensurate
with degree
requirements,
Wellesley
College limits
the number
of independent
research courses
in any single
department
to two.
