United Trauma Relief

About Us

Centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United Trauma Relief (UTR) is a student-run nationwide network of university groups working to prevent and alleviate suffering that results from poverty, disease and war. UTR members approach concerns that arise from global epidemics, refugee crises and disasters through three basic types of initiatives:

o       Active redistribution of needed resources from developed to developing countries;

o       Short-term relief and long-term reconstruction projects;

o       Direct coordination and hands-on work with needy communities in developing countries.

For example, UTR’s projects include:

o       Collection of AIDS drugs from U.S. pharmacies and distribution of the medicines to clinics in Haiti and Africa;

o       Procurement and delivery of plastic sheeting and other refugee camp supplies to Afghanistan, followed by landmine clearance and long-term reconstruction initiatives;

o       Local community-specific efforts to assist needy members of U.S. cities and educate fellow students about issues of global humanitarian concern. Click on the “Research & Reading” button on the left menu bar to find books and articles discussing these issues.

UTR also sponsors students who wish to work abroad on relief, reconstruction and development projects.

Our Activity Report describes both recently-completed and ongoing projects, as well as future initiatives.
