United Trauma Relief

About Us

Anyone at any university can start a UTR chapter.

The process is simple:

  1. E-mail utr@mit.edu and tell us you’re interested. We’ll help you through every step of the process.
  2. You can start with just a handful of students. Most chapters begin by appointing three student officers to direct the group:
    • Program Director: keeps track of national campaigns by being in touch with the MIT-UTR chapter and keeps track of his or her chapter’s progress on adopted projects.
    • Secretary: schedules weekly or biweekly meetings on campus, writes a short weekly update documenting meeting minutes and current status on UTR activities, and e-mails this update to the campus group and cc’s utr@mit.edu.
    • Treasurer: keeps track of group finances and expenditures, appeals for funds through the university, and manages fundraising and donations.
  3. Start by adopting two basic projects:
    • A few lectures: Hold a short lecture series by reserving a lecture hall, inviting a few notable professors to speak on topics related to UTR (e.g., AIDS policy, refugee problems, landmines, etc.), and publicize the events. Before and after the lecture, tell students about the new UTR chapter; lectures like this are often great for recruiting.
    • Start working on an ongoing UTR project. The AIDS Drug Recycling Initiative under “Epidemic Relief” is often best. Ask us to send you an information packet, then have each of the members of your group call a few pharmacies and report back on progress. E-mail sanjayb@mit.edu and vinodrao@mit.edu if you experience problems.
    • Once these projects get rolling, the treasurer should find out how to become an official student organization at your university. Ask around to find the relevant paperwork. Also, have the treasurer appeal for funding. $500 is more than enough for the first semester, and should go to expenses for the AIDS postal fees and publicity expenses. Once you’re at this stage, e-mail utr@mit.edu and we’ll discuss larger-scale coordination with other chapters and how to participate in national drives.

By following these steps, you should be on your way to having a sustainable UTR chapter on your campus.
