Social Events

UWIP's primary social events are faculty dinners. Faculty we've had the pleasure of dining with from 2009-2011 include Jan Egedal, Nergis Mavalvala, Alan Guth, Scott Hughes, Allan Adams, Nuh Gedik, Martin Zwierlein, Krishna Rajagopal, Jocelyn Monroe, Ed Bertschinger, Barton Zwiebach, Joe Formaggio, Janet Conrad, John McGreevy, Robert Jaffe, Max Tegmark, Enectali Figueroa, Peter Dourmashkin, Jesse Thaler, Eddie Farhi, Peter Fisher, Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, John Belcher, Alex van Oudenaarden, David Pritchard, and Deepto Chakrabarty.

We also host dinners with the Graduate Women in Physics Groups at MIT, buy Kool-Aid for students after their physics finals, and usually go out for ice cream at the end of the year. (Academic year, not calendar year. It's cold in December.) In 2011, we hosted the 1st Maybe-Annual Physics Exploration Week for freshmen interested in majoring in physics. Events included a faculty/alumni careers dinner and a 5-Minute Physics Lecture Series, in which we attempted to teach 8 full semesters of physics classes in under an hour. The latter ended with surprisingly little traumatization.

If you have any ideas for where we could go and what we could do, email the organizers of the UWIP group.
