Dwight Smith - 1999 NEFC Co-Coach of the Year
A three-sport high school star at Tabor Academy in Marion, MA, Dwight was named most valuable player in football, basketball and baseball. He also played American Legion Baseball and was again an MVP and all-star choice. At Bates College, Dwight was a four-year letter winner in both baseball and football while majoring in history. Following a year in graduate school at the University of Massachusetts concentrating in sports management, Dwight returned to Bates as the offensive line coach. The following year he coached the offensive line at Williams College before moving to M.I.T. in 1978. In 1993, Smith was named the New England Collegiate Football Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Beavers to a 5-4 record. He was presented the Conference Appreciation Award in 1996 in recognition of his efforts on behalf of the conference which went above and beyond the call of duty. Following a very successful 6-4 campaign in 1999, Smith garnered New England Football Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors. He is currently the coaches' representative to the executive committee of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. In addition to being head football coach, Dwight Smith is also an Associate Professor of Physical Education and the MIT varsity baseball assistant coach.
