Memorial Drive West
The MIT residences lining "Amherst Alley" span the spectrum, from the flamboyant facade of Ashdown, a former hotel, to the clean lines of Tang. Many rooms and windows overlook the Charles River and Boston. In fact, when acclaimed Finnish architect Alvar Aalto was a visiting professor at MIT in the 1940s, he designed Baker House with a serpentine plan, so that nearly all rooms have river views.
