In the past 3 or so years, the VSG mailing list has gotten lots of mail with suggestions/recommendations for boston-area restaurants. Here is a compilation of many of those suggested: GOOD VEGGIE RESTAURANTS IN THE BOSTON/CAMBRIDGE AREA (also check out the link from the MIT VSG Web page to boston-area veggie-friendly restaurants) Grendel's Den - Harvard Square Buddha's Delight, near Chinatown Tstop (near the corner of Wahington and Beach) (all vegan (except one milk drink), with fake meats) Country Life (all vegan, buffet, some fake meats) King & I (Thai food, veg section on menu, kind of upscale, entrees $8-10) Shalimar (Indian food, Central Square) Middle East (cozy, kind of "grunge" atmosphere, fun place to chat) Chef Chow's (you guessed it, Chinese, Harvard Sq.) Trattoria Il Panino (North End - Best of Boston '94) Steve's (Greek, Newbury street, affordable) Masao's Kitchen, Porter Exchange, 1815 Massachusetts Avenue, 497-7348 Vegan macrobiotic. Very good. It's a bit of a hike, but the trip is worth it. Most dishes are $8. The portions are adequate, but not overwhelming (I actually had room for dessert; usually I don't). It's not a large restaurant; the atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. The menu has nice variety, and includes burritos, lasagna, sandwiches, salads, soups, bagels and muffins. They serve fruit juice sparklers (very good), and a sizable dessert selection (menu varying), including several kinds of fruit crumbles (eggless), fruit and yogurt, chocolate pie, etc. I'm not sure if they had vegan desserts (I don't remember what all they had). They are located at 344 Huron Ave in Cambridge. Take the T to Harvard Sq.; take a bus from the T station (the bus tunnels are located past the turnstiles near the main exit/entrance (not Church St.)). Take the route 72 bus, which makes a loop around/thru Concord Ave and Huron Ave. Or take a 74 or 78 bus, which goes north on Concord Ave, but get off at Huron Ave (only a few streets away) and walk west several blocks. Pentimento is not too far from Concord, and it would be on your left. It's easy to miss --- it just has a painted symbol of a flower with the name Pentimento hugging the petals, on the side of the building. The restaurant is not free-standing, but in the middle of a "strip-type" building. The store next to it has a blue canopy. Across the street, you can see a clock-on-a-pole. By the way, this area is not too far from Fresh Pond. Happy eating, Laura ==== From: sgw@bronze.lcs.mit.edu (stephen g. wadlow) Subject: high recommendations for a new chinese restaurant.... Over the past week, I've had a significant number of meals at Pu-Pu Hot Pot in Central Square (2 doors down from Tosci's) and really really like them. They are very vegetarian friendly, and have a number of really tasty vegetarian dishes at quite reasonable prices. The manager has been quite helpful in pointing out veggie dishes or modifying other dishes to be vegetarian. Two other notable features: They're open somewhat late (11pm? 11:30?) and they have veggie Dim Sum on weekends (11am-4pm). The Dim Sum selection isn't amazing, but was quite good, and very filling. I recommend mentioning that you're a vegetarian when you go. Let'em know how many of us are out here..... steve ========== From: "Michael Blackmore" If you haven't done it you should check out the one in Brookline. Shang Chai (404 Harvard St., Brookline). Also check out Masao's Kitchen in the Porter Square Exchange building in Porter Square Cambridge. ==========
