As I'm sure many folks in the southern US will tell you, hush puppies are deep
fried corn meal batter. Although I'm a Northerner, I will take the liberty of
posting a hush puppy recipe, straight off the Quaker white corn meal bag:

HUSH PUPPIES

Vegetable oil
1-1/2 cups Quaker Enriched White Corn Meal [of course, no other brand will
1/2 cup all-purpose flour work! :-)]
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 egg, beaten

Heat 2-inch deep oil to 375 F. Combine remaining ingredients: mix well. Drop
by rounded teaspoonfuls into hot oil, frying a few at a time until golden
brown. Drain on paper towels.

YIELD: About 2 dozen.

So, the answer to the original poster's request is: at least lacto-ovo,
although I'm sure that there are vegan alternatives, which perhaps someone
will post. Also, the standard caveats/warnings regarding deep fried foods &
fat apply here. (personally speaking, I don't make a steady diet of fatty
foods, but I do have them on occasion)
