Welcome to MIT! We've compiled this guide to help you get acquainted
with vegetarian resources surrounding MIT. All of these locations
are accessible from MIT by foot, or via the T (subway).
Kendall, Central, Harvard, and Porter are all on the Red Line.
The #1 Bus also connects MIT, Central, and Harvard.
- General Information
- Vegetarian and Vegan offerings are somewhat limited on campus.
There are options though. You can view menus for all MIT dining
halls by going to the MIT Dining website. MITVSG works with MIT Dining to
make improvements in the number and quality of vegetarian offerings
on campus. MIT Dining welcomes your feedback, comments, and recipes....they
can be reached at foodstuff@mit.edu.
- Steam Cafe
- Steam Cafe serves a hot vegetarian dish daily at lunch (curries, stews, etc). Check their website for today's menu or to submit your own favorite recipe.
- Stata Center Forbes Cafe
- The options at the Stata Center cafe include pizza, sushi, hot dishes, and pre-packaged salads.
- Lobdell Food Court
- Located on the 2nd floor of the
Stratton Student Center, Lobdell has a food court with various vendors, including Sepal falafel.
Sometimes they serve
Vegi-Chili as soup of the day.
- Anna's Taqueria
- Anna's Taqueria, first floor of the student center, serves vegetable burritos, but their rice is not vegetarian-friendly.
- Food Trucks
- Around lunch time, food trucks line up in front of 77 Massachusetts
Avenue and in the parking lot by building 68. These sell a variety of vegetarian-friendly items at affordable
prices (falafel, tofu, stir fry, etc).
- Harvest Co-operative
Supermarkets
- Local food co-op in Central Square (also Jamaica Plain); you don't
have to be a member to shop! Excellent bulk items and spices,
organic produce, full grocery selection. 581 Mass Ave in Central

- Shaw's Star Market
- Large supermarket within walking distance from 77 Mass Ave.
Star has a great selection of vegan and vegetarian items, as well
as anything else you might want (at lower prices than at an organic food store.
Get their "Shaw's Card" to save money. To get there, walk up
Mass Ave towards Central Square. Star is right above the University
Park Hotel (past Random). T: Central.
- Bread and Circus
- Whole Foods Market
is a national chain of natural food supermarkets. Excellent produce
and organically grown foods. A variety of eco-friendly household
and personal care products. Somewhat yuppie, this is a popular
spot for MIT profs and students. Nearest of three locations: Prospect
Street between Mass Ave and Harvard Street in Central Square,

- LaVerde's
- Conveniently located in the ground floor of the MIT student
center, but pricey. Veggie-friendly deli, limited produce, small
selection of soy products. 617-621-0733.
- Haymarket
- Fridays and Saturdays, at the Haymarket in downtown Boston near
Faneuil Hall. Supermarket-bound produce of varying quality, rude
vendors, cheap cheap prices! The selection is huge, good quality

- Central Square Farmer's Market
- Every Monday through Nov. 20, Parking lot at Norfolk & Bishop

- Buddha's Delight
- Vegan except for dairy in some desserts. Consistent rave reviews.
Specializes in temple cuisine, a very impressive traditional Chinese
vegetarian cuisine. 5 Beach Street, Chinatown, 617-451-2395. T: Chinatown

- Picante
- Authentic Mexican, with salsa bar! Several excellent vegetarian
entrees are offered, and the rice and beans are always vegetarian.

- Indian
- Central Square has many Indian restaurants, all near each other
along Mass Ave, including India Pavilion, Gandhi, Passage to India,
and Tandoor House. Also, Bombay Club in Harvard Square.
- Country Life
- Vegan. Outstanding "all you care or dare to eat" buffet and
salad bar. Seventh-Day Adventist. Family operated, owned by a
nonprofit board. Business lunch discount on the buffet between
11:30am and noon. Dinner 4 nights per week -- call ahead for hours.

- Christopher's
- Natural foods. Many vegetarian and vegan options. Grain burgers,
soups, Mexican food, pasta dishes. No preservatives or artificial

- Grendel's Den
- Try the salad bar: homemade taboule, extensive fruit salads,
pasta salads, veggie lasagna, etc. 89 Winthrop Street & JFK, Harvard

- The King and I
- Thai. Will substitute tofu for any meat in any dish. They cook
everything to order and do not use chicken fat to cook their vegetables
(like many oriental restaurants). 145 Charles Street, Boston,

- A charming Russian cafe with several vegetarian selections.
