The Philippines Project was initiated by the MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the 2009-2010 academic year. The Provincial Health Office (PHO) in Capiz Province, Philippines sought advice from MIT to support its first drinking water quality testing effort, specifically the type of water quality tests that should be performed and the overall research design. Two types of tests were recommended by the MIT team: Quanti-Tray and EC-Kit. The use of the hydrogen-sulfide (H2S) bacteria test (H2S test) was also recommended as an additional field-based test which could potentially supplant parts of the EC-Kit.
