Worked at tuning ABS requirements up for external review.

Helped prepare for Team Leader meeting to discuss Hay/McBer Project.
Began Serious review of ABS requirements with Jeff.
Reviewed PD-Team priorities.
Kicked off Project to document Install/Update.

Wrote First draft of ABS Crippled Mode Spec.
Learned a little about how Oracle works and what of it ABS takes advantage of.
Helped work Sparc 4 CDRom issue.

Wrote second draft of ABS crippled Mode Spec
Learned how PD Database Prototype was done.
Worked with Diane Delgado to make it happen under Oracle.
Began investigating a lead on Project Management methodology that I like. (More details to come.)

Got Brain Dump from jis on the Web-based authentication system he worked out for OLSIS.

Sent draft of notes from Testing conference call to Transarc for review.
Reviewed handouts from Integrated Project Systems on their project management offerings. Produced 1 page analysis and gave it to Mike Barker, and Bob Ferrara.
DLI Discuss Library disk space needs with Owens, and available solutions with Matt Braun.

Fixed bug in Willow Z39.50 driver that prevented Avery Index from working.
Pointed development version of Willow at Tulip Datasets on bloom.mit.edu.
Installed new launcher, bulbit in SGI libdevo.
Enabled basic NFS access to bloom.mit.edu for Document Services
Justin Cave moved in datasets 81 to 87 from bulb to bloom

Produce HR Speak Up epistle -- redrafted original slightly.
Removed Tulip from library/Willow configuration.
Changed Willow Medline password to re-enable operation.
Drafted Work Breakdown of Oracle Web for PD Project DB.
Made progress in resolving open issues between MIT and Transarc.

Circulated amended Transarc Testing document
Installed new launcher, bulbit in Sun libdevo.
Write Criteria/Principles for admissions into Oracle Web shared service.
Met with Susan Minai-Azary and others to get some review and expansion of Oracle Web service plan. Outcome: split into multiple projects: 1. Teams and Projects DB, 2. People DB with ehoffer, 3. Discovery Project to investigate Shared Oracle Web service.

Reviewed Willow db config issues for OCLC databases. (Alas, we're not at all far along. It seems it was a matter of us needing to cook up the config files from the OCLC Web Pages describing them.)
Presented at ACMG a particular negative opinion of SGI.
Came to closure on the vcache AFS bug understanding
Presented at Ilead. (Sent out meeting info.)
Handed off to miki Integration des tool into Solaris and the other tasks of fetching source code from Alliance Plus
Started carrying PowerBook to meetings. This way I can manage to
leave the meeting without as many action items, such as "send email about this or that" and "transcribe these into minutes".

Fixed a few typeos and added front matter to ABS Overview doc.
Submitted input for effort report of 5 year plan.
Scoped out issues and requirements for beginning to hire someone.
Revised pplan_basic.html to incorporate some of TJM's team's ideas.
Started off a PDPD project plan pasting together vrt, delgado, and pplan_basic components.
Cleaned my desk down to SOME bare formica!

11 Oct 1996

Migrated Carter Snowden's on-the-fly tiff to gif conversion from bulb to Bloom.
Ran rebuild on Bloom to make all 8 datasets in the WWW set.
Attended PD Team Meeting.
Verified restores of Tulip Archives works. Asked that Bulb be shut down ASAP.
Wrote new Tulip WWW home page. Talks about PIDS.
Worked through fixing Bizarr M-<DEL> behavior in AUIS 7.5
Figured out how to get Word 6 docs from my Unix Mailbox to my Mac. (It isn't pretty!)
Had my brains picked clean by Vrt and Delgado at a Project Database requirements Specification setting meeting.
Attended ABS meeting.
Revised PDPD project plan Web page as per Vrt's edits, and some reformatting for the timeline typewriter art.
Met with Roger, Bob and Lorraine to discuss issues of hiring.
Ran in one line patch to AUIS 7.5 table.
Successfully recompiled a piece of AUIS 7.5 (maybe C++ isn't the antichrist?)
Requested a raft of afsreq thingies to house AUIS thingies.

Worked with Ted McCabe on reorganizing and simplifying Andrew AFS volumes.
Helped with Firefighting problems with SGI install and update.
Investigated issues in improving the way Team Athena documents what it develops.
Reviewed Secure Oracle Web document and handed to Diane a list of typeos and a few suggestions. On the whole, it's a GOOD document.
Attended ABS Meeting.
Attended Release Team Meeting -- brokered review and improvement of release delivery and problem resolution procedures.
Brokered answers to questions by Karlyne Hutchings on writing ABS Admin Guide.
Attended Maryam's going away luncheon.
Wrote up table of services to migrate from DECStation: /mit/teamhtml/Athena/plans/DEC_migration.html
Reviewed and shipped out Ad for System Programmer III job search.

Demoed Tulip to visitors from France.
Attended demo of Scopus as we use it for Help Desk System.
Attended delivery meeting. Sent out minutes.
Attended ILEAD meeting. Sent out minutes with Gems about Hay McBer Competency Model.
Began reviewing ApplixWare.
Reported slowness on ApplixWare on 24M SPARC Classic. New version 4.3, may be better.
Attended SGI showoff at Boston Museum of Science
Attended nut-lib meeting. Sent out minutes. We pretty much concluded that WebZ can offer as good or better functionality than Willow.
Called up IPS and told them we won't be using them.

Reviewed Project DB requirements doc.
Worked issue of ApplixWare axnet process.
Got Word 5.1 email enclosure to un-binhex and read into ApplixWare.
Worked on revising Team Athena home pages. Worked on work breakdowns for Athena Software Maintenance, Active projects, and projects under consideration. Installed a copy of Bob's spreadsheet.
Learned HotMetalPro. Sent Alex some reviews.
Installed ApplixWare at home. It runs VERY fast with 48Meg and 133Mhz.
Voiced issues for SGI visit.
Volunteered for N42 client team.
Converted moties milestone summaries to Applixware spreadsheet. PRINTED IT!

8 Nov 1996

Got through to WABI developers. Gonna try and set up conference call next month.
Tried out Transarc Support Web pages. Reported problems finding my ticket of interest.
Filled out Solaris 2.6 Beta questionaire. We probably won't do the Beta because, as Miki points out: none of our testing is useful without AFS.
Sent SPIII ad to infosys.
Got SGI escall bug reporting/tracking app installed on my machine.
Wrote review of Applixware.
