Goals for the FY2001 (in order of decreasing priority):

  1. Leadership of Deliver and Service Athena (sub-goals in chronological order)
    1. Investigate student salary market parity issues and if appropriate pursue increases. --DONE
    2. Fill open developer position opened by departure of Dan Winship -- DONE
    3. Do phase II of Performance Reviews: Goal Setting. -- DONE
    4. Give team members explicit opportunities to lead Discovery and Delivery projects -- DONE (amb, miki, rbasch)
    5. Implement metrics around Athena and other Project work. -- PROGRESS (it's a moving target)
    6. Foster more leadership growth in the team. (Measured by examples of individuals demonstrating new leadership) -- PROGRESS
    7. Graceful move to W92 (Measured by team satisfaction, and lack of disruption of work.) -- DONE
    8. Help foster integration of E40 and W91 cultures. (Measured by examples of collaboration and benefits of doing things "the way the other guys would have done it.") -- DELAYED (few joint projects to exploit this year)

  2. Digital Library project with HP and MIT Libraries (a.k.a. DSpace) (milestones in chronological order)
    1. Fill 5 open positions by May 31. (Margret Branshofsky 5/1, 30% Larry Stone 4/1, David Stuve 5/22, Mick Bass 5/25, Peter Bretton, Joyce Ng, (Stone left), Robert Tansley, (Project Grew) Peter Carmichael) -- DONE
    2. Get office space ready for use by June 1, 2000 -- DONE
    3. Attend DL2000 Conference -- DONE
    4. Version 0 Specifications delivered by August 31, 2000 -- CHANGED, different project plan.
    5. Version 0 system delivered to Lead users by December 31, 2000 -- CHANGED: Demo System Delivered January 1.
    6. Version 1 revision specifications delivered by May 31, 2001 -- CHANGED Design objectives sign off February 2001.
    7. Version 1 system delivered to users by August 31 2001 -- CHANGED Minimal system demonstrated Aug 1, lead user system scheduled for September 30, 2001.

  3. Mentoring IS projects (in order of decreasing priority)
    1. Get team members to create and maintain project notebooks -- DONE, AUI, APSE, Long Jobs.
    2. Athena User Interface Project. -- DONE Shipped 26 July 2001
    3. Long Jobs Discovery Project -- DELAYED key stakeholders required special testing.
      • Helped with check-in meeting
      • Provided occasional advice to Bob on procedure, politics, and trade-offs.
    4. Athena Private Workstation (sub-projects in chronological order)
      1. Discovery Project -- DONE
      2. Delivery of Discovery recommended Athena 8.4 changes -- DONE
      3. Delivery of Kerberos and AFS unbundled packages -- DELAYED: other, higher priority work overrode this.

  4. Vendor Liaison (in order of decreasing priority.)
    1. Get bona fide contacts to replace my interactions with
      • Sun -- DONE Garry Zacheiss is doing many day-to-day Sun liaison I used to do.
      • SGI -- DONE. Bob Basch has taken over in almost all cases.
      • Transarc -- DROPPED. Although we have left the door open, IBM seems not to want to work with on AFS. I have a small part in the new Open AFS relationships.
    2. Foster good relations with our primary Vendors. -- PROGRESS: Sun relations are friendly and productive. I've offloaded to Phil Long the Dell aspects that were bothersome to me.
    3. Identify and mentor next steps with Office Productivity tools for Athena. -- PROGRESS: Alex Prengel and Rich Garcia here have done very well with working with Sun on Star Office. I've cooked up a modest project plan for the next year.
