My Favorite Milestones in 2001
Issues closed:
12/21/01 Test Cluster is now totally moved, the KVM is installed and working, and the clutter is on track for going away.
11/7/01 I've carried "Fill position opened by departure of Thomas Bushnell -- on Hold 3/15/01" for a very long time. But we've had a different staffing model for months.
This issue is terminated.
10/10/01 I've carried "Get Star Office NOW and NDA signed." for a very long time. With the release of Star Office 6.0 Beta, this issue is irrelevant and so I'm closing it out.
9/10/01 Vendor liaison role has sufficiently shrunk, that my vendor projects page has gone away. Now vendor liaison
is a skill I mentor others with, and a skill I bring to bear in projects, instead of a primary role.
7/30/01 Officially notified rferrara and adolan that we're abandoning our search for temporary help.
7/26/01 Athena 9.0 with AUI went to public release without significant mishaps.
7/11/01 Pruned NECX Replacement Project info from inbox. Others
have handled this work quite well with my limited involvement.
7/6/01 Published revised Athena UNIX Platform Team pages that are agreed upon as a starting point for further discussions of direction, focus, project work, priorities, and resourcing.
7/2/01 Owls rattified Garry Zacheiss as responsible for Sun Platform configuration and renewal issues.
6/8/01 Received Sun Source code meeting
our requiremens. This issue goes to sleep for another year. :-)
5/30/01 Bonafide contact to Transarc other than me: With Open AFS migration going in earnest, I am cutting back my Transarc Liaison to a minimum. The focus is on the occasional note to IBM telling them why we're not collaborating, and the occasional fielding of
issues.
5/23/2001 OpenAFS for Linux: Linux Athena based on RedHat 7.1 and Open AFS released to beta, and taken by me. Issue of reliable OpenAFS and RedHat 7.1 seems in hand (for the moment, unless some bizarre last-minute bug emerges.)
4/3/2001 Sun test systems chosen, ordered and received.

DSpace:
- Triaged dspace-code list after a couple months of not paying enough attention to it.
- Facilitated a discussion of issues in managing how different subsystems in DSpace find out about changes to the universe of Site/Community/Collection/Item entities. Helped synthesize a solution that answered latent requirements, satisfied stakeholders in various subsystems within DSpace, and which improved people's working relationships.
Lead Athena
Team:
- Both EC3 sessions have been completed for the team.
- Built the AnthroCart for the test cluster.
- Received new KVM switch and did preliminary testing. Checked in with users on issues. Contacted tech support with show stoppers.
Champion Athena UNIX:

- Attended 1.5 day long Mastering Meetings course. It was fun, but I question whether it was the best use of a day and a half of my time occurring somewhat when I'm usually sleeping. DSpace:
- Discussion threads: Communities and Collections
- Looked at logging requirements. Nothing controversial there.
- Started trying to look at Content Management API, but it's not a spec, as such. It's auto-generated javadocs that I'll need guidance to understand.
- Looked at the one page summary of the Content Management API. Nothing controversial.
- Helped where I could. Stayed out of the
way of the coders in crunch mode for the most part.
- Logged a bug with RedHat in how 7.1 handles HP monitors driven by Matrox Millenium G200. Spent a couple hours fault isolating.
Lead Athena Team:
- Investigated status of "Package AFS" and "Package Kerberos" projects. We could ship Linux offerings as soon as we wrote documentation on what it was, what it provided, and how it worked. It raises a larger question: Who is responsible for establishing and maintaining individually acquirable installers as SWRT does?
- Drafted and sent out September Monthly Status Report.
- Sorted through my Vendor web
pages. Put them in the access-restricted Attic directory to keep them for historical reference, and as sources of data for other, more affirmative outreach activities.
- Produced Email Client mini project pages, and first draft of GUI client candidate evaluation. Converted to HTML ghudson's transition plan.
- Officially delegated leadership of the Email Client mini-project to Greg Hudson.
- Took on leadership
of "Investigate GUI Zephyr issues" for AUI follow-on.
- Drafted list of common Zephyr tasks. Discussed pre-planning for usability review with sbjones.
- Set up and attended usability review of WinZephyr and two UNIX Zephyr GUI's.
- Did testing on KVM for UNIX test cluster systems. A teeny bit flaky, but probably workable. Ordered cables, a USB converter and a Sun converter.
- Spent
a day on assembling UNIX Test Cluster, and finding the limits of the KVM.
- Moved most of the Athena UNIX Test Cluster to a new location with help from Ken Raeburn, David Hogarth, and Miki Lusztig.
- Learned a lot about the Belkin KVM. I hate it. It's going to be REPLACED by something from ANYONE else!
- Wrote 3 drafts of the
Athena UNIX Platform Team budget/team template. Handed it in to tomt for as input to the budgeting process.
- Got the EC3 presentations scheduled.
Champion Athena UNIX:
- Looked at HP, Dell, and Linux Care's support levels. Dell is a bit better. HP is the same. Linux Care does not seem to have noticed Red Hat 7.1.
- Played with Mozilla at home. I was IMPRESSED. I've asked tbelton to check out the current snapshot.
- Opened some bugs with Mozilla. Got acquainted with their bug
tracking process. I liked it. Got acquainted with some of the developers by chatting on irc.mozilla.org.
- Migrated my home system to RedHat 7.1, and opened bugs with RedHat. Some of this work proved helpful later as I helped out with the dual boot Athena Linux installer, and IT Partners talks.
- Helped with APSE by downloading Star Office 6.0
beta from Sun.
- Preparation for IT partners demo: Did a test install of Dual Boot Linux Athena in W89 with sgoldman and sharari, and amb. System now boots NT and Linux Athena.
- Began investigating issues with some semi-formal Mozilla testing.
- Worked with amb and Steve Goldman to debug an improved Athena Linux install that supports Linux Athena as a second bootable system.
Spent a day installing Linux Athena on 13 machines in W89 in preparation for an IT Partners hands-on Demo.
- Gave hands-on Demo of Dual Boot Linux Athena at IT partners. Talked a lot about the different tradeoffs we made. Made some new friends.
- Tried out StarOffice 6.0 and found a bug that prevented me from using it.
Academic Computing:
- Received quote for new Athena Dell config.
- Asked Dell rep for clarification on Image Watch program and it's overlap with Athena requirements.
- Reviewed resume and salary requirements of someone who might be a good person for IS to hire.
- Began investigating issues around unifying UNIX and Windows Zephyr. Helped get some discussion started between appropriate developers in both platform areas.
Other:
- Helped set up and then attended first meeting of Linux Desktop Discovery project.
