MIT Information Systems: WebMail
Internet Explorer Users

A number of WebMail users have notices that when they go back to a computer with Internet Explorer, it allows them to log into WebMail without entering their password. This is a feature of Internet Explorer, NOT WebMail. Microsoft built this feature in, and it is an unfortunate one.

Just Say No
If you log in to WebMail with Internet Explorer and it asks you to remember your password, you should answer no to this question and check the box to not ask this question in the future. If you have already said yes, Internet Explorer will automatically enter your password every time you type in your account information.

Clear Passwords
To clear the passwords IE has stored, and change the setting:

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Click on Internet Options
  4. Click on the Content tab
  5. Under the Personal Information section on the Content tab, click on AutoComplete
  6. Click on the button that says Clear Passwords. When it says clear all passwords, click OK
  7. If checked, uncheck Use AutoComplete for Forms and User names and passwords on forms.
  8. WebMail and other secure sites will now require users to enter their username and password to authenticate.
